Our Story
Richard has over 20 years in the construction industry. He started his career working for his uncle’s building business of three generations, “Don Matthews Building Ltd.” The building company was commissioned for numerous works on historic and period properties, where Richard gained experience in all aspects of the building trade. One of Richards fondest memories of that time was working on the renovation of Kingslow Hall, Shropshire. It was there that he developed a passion & creativity for working in rural and period living spaces, specifically kitchens.
Richard & Gemma founded R. Matthews Bespoke Interiors in 2017. They initially set up a kitchen showroom in Eccleshall with an emphasis on bespoke modular kitchens. A few successful years later, after being inundated with enquiries, they realised there was a huge demand for handmade cabinetry and joinery.
However, in 2020 R Matthews Bespoke interiors shifted away from using the showroom, as the demand for handmade kitchens – all designed to meet the client’s vision – outstripped the desire for conventional kitchens.
Most of our kitchens are now handcrafted in our Derbyshire workshop, which we encourage our clients to visit if possible.
R. Matthews Bespoke Interiors design studio is based in Penkridge, Staffordshire, where we house a small, functional, handmade display, as well as lots of beautiful samples of solid worksurfaces, mouldings, handles and a wide selection of door samples. It’s a wonderful space to have a coffee, sit and chat about your projects.
